Never Leave

Roy woke up to the sound of a set of keys hitting the carpeted floor. He was in Tim’s apartment, he could tell. It smelled like Tim’s apartment, the strong scent of a generic air freshener that Cassie had spilled on the rug the week he moved in, and still hung in the air months later.

Tim had moved into the apartment on the same week of his eighteenth birthday. Roy was almost certain that Tim planned it that way so he would have an excuse not to have an outrageous party at the Tower that weekend. Roy had heard later that Tim had looked ‘disgustingly sincere’ when he cried off a huge party because he had unpacking to do. It had made Roy smile, because he knew that look. It was the same look Tim gave him when he told Roy he did not mind being bottom, but he really wanted to try something new this time.

Kid knew how to get what he wanted.

Roy felt Tim come to stand over his prone form, and kneel down on the floor next to the couch. He lay his head on the sofa next to Roy’s hip and Roy’s hand went, without thought, to run his fingers through Tim’s soft, dark hair.

“What’s with the smirk, Harper?”

“Mmmm, thinking about you.”

“You’re a disgusting sap, you know that don’t you?” Tim asked conversationally.

All the Bats seemed to have this sense of the macho. It showed up different places for all of them. Batman was macho all the time. Dick was macho in a fight and when his skills were questioned. Tim was macho when he came to things like sappy conversations. He could care less if someone said he was ineffective or a poor fighter, he had confidence in that area, it was the softer stuff that left him fumbling.

Over the past six months Roy had learned to take Tim’s rebuffs in stride. Really, Tim’s skittishness around emotions seemed like the least of the problems their relationship presented. It had been a long and emotionally tumultuous ride.

No one seemed to think what the two of them were doing was a good idea. Hell, there were times when Roy did not even think it was a good idea, and Tim had told Roy of his own doubts a number of times.

Though, after that first time in the dingy apartment, they could not seem to stay away from each other. It would have been easy if it was just sex, but it had become clear pretty early on that it was not just sex. Roy started to feel compelled to spend time with Tim. Every time Lian said something cute, or some soccer mom pissed him off, or when he made a spectacular shot Roy felt the need to call Tim and let him know.

Roy stopped wanting to go out on weekends and meet women because, even when they were not fooling around, Tim’s company was much more satisfying than anyone else’s. He had this sharp, dry wit that appealed to Roy in most amazing ways. Tim was insightful, and introspective, and he always looked at problems Roy was facing in a different way. It seemed like talking to Tim about them made everything clearer and easier to handle.

Tim was also amazingly supportive for someone who was so young, and he always seemed to be there when Roy needed him.

Dick had been furious with Roy. They had a huge fight and said all kinds of things to each other that, while they had been forgiven, would never be forgotten. Tim had never said whether or not Dick had spoken to him about the situation, but Roy knew that he had from the way they acted around each other. Almost tense, and very strained.

Both Ollie and Bruce had been against it, too, but with them it was more the age thing.

Cassie had come after him when she found out. It had been two months after their little escapade, and Roy came home to find her sitting on his sofa. She took a swing at him and knocked him down. She spent twenty minutes screaming at Roy for taking advantage of Tim while he was emotionally vulnerable.

Roy was persona non grata at the Tower these days.

The only person who did not seem to have a problem with them was Miss Martian.

One night, after they had sex, Tim told Roy that the real reason he was still hanging on was because of Miss Martian. Evidently she had told him not to let the stress of everyone’s disapproval get to them, and that what he and Roy felt for each other was good for them both. She had hugged him with tears in her eyes and told him to hang on, and bad stuff would eventually blow over.

She had been right.

A few weeks after Tim turned eighteen the level of pestering had gone down considerably. However, now that the stress of everyone else making problems for them was gone, they had more time to make problems for themselves.

Both of them had abandonment issues, both for good reason. Roy had always been good at reaching out and taking what he wanted, it was hanging on to it that was the problem for him. Roy had gotten better about the whole abandonment thing, he had Lian, and he would always have Lian.

Tim on the other hand was smart enough to know he had issues, but seemingly incapable of stopping those issues from messing with their relationship. Tim would get scared and start avoiding Roy for days, and Roy’s uncertainties would kick in and their mutual messed-up-ness would feed off each other.

It had gotten really bad one time and Tim had not spoken to Roy in almost a month despite Roy’s best efforts. It had been, surprisingly, Dick who had trapped them in a room together and told them that, while he did not really approve of them, they made each other happy. He also said that if they did not figure their shit out in the next twenty minutes he would kick both their asses.

They had all laughed and Roy and Tim went back to Roy’s place where the talked for hours and Tim cried and tried to explain how scared he was. Roy explained how he understood. He explained about Brave Bow and the Dine and Ollie. And the heroin.

Tim curled himself up in Roy’s lap and they fell asleep that way, and for the first time since the whole thing started, Roy began to think that this might just work out after all.

Dick had called Roy the next day and told Roy that there was one secret to keeping Tim: hang on.

Roy had every intention of hanging on.

“Come ‘ere.” Roy slurred, and pulled at Tim until he was stretched out on top of Roy with his face buried in Roy neck.

“You know, right? That I’m never gonna leave you.” Roy’s throat felt thick when he asked.

Tim nuzzled closer to Roy’s neck and his breath gusted across Roy’s cheek as he sleepily responded.

“Never leave.”

This is fabulous! Such a wonderful look at the progress of their relationship and everyone's reactions to it. This makes me smile.

That was amazing. You have a great insight into both of them; I love this follow up and how even Dick was able to offer some key advice.

Glad you liked it! Dick loves them both too much to stay angry at them for very long.

Aww, that's great! I love M'gann's reactions, and Cassie being protective best of all. I would definitely like to see more in this 'series'. :)

I feel like, while Cassie isn't the best for Tim ROMANTICALLY, she really would be a great over-protective sister figure.

I'm glad you enjoyed!

Aww, they're so fucked up and so cute. Love Cassie actually taking a role in her friend's life, and poor Roy--founding Titan, effectively kicked out of the Tower. And Miss Martian is the best thing ever.
