You’d Be Better Off Alone

The fight had been a bad one in a long series of bad ones. He tried to open up, he really did, but years of being alone made it impossibly hard. He had to spend hours preparing himself to make one simple confession and it seemed to Bruce that admissions that cost him everything to verbalize seemed like they meant nothing to Clark. Not because Clark did not care, but because Clark did not understand.

It was not that Bruce was not trying; it was that Bruce was on a lower level and had a long way to go before he caught up with Clark. Bruce knew that Clark was frustrated with him, but he also knew he could make Clark understand. Self disclosure was not one of Bruce’s strong suits, but they were good together, they’d been good together for a long time now.

As his plane landed on the roof of Clarks building Bruce went over his meticulously planned speech again and again. He knew Clark would be annoyed at him showing up as Batman instead of just Bruce, but Bruce knew it could not be avoided. Clark wanted a normal life away from public eye, it was necessary to preserve his life as Clark Kent. Spending time in the public eye with Bruce Wayne would be counter productive.

Yet another point of contention, Bruce thought as repelled down to Clark’s fire escape.

There was a warm glow of light from inside the apartment and condensation on the windows that made it clear Clark had cooked himself some dinner. Bruce felt the warmth of affection flood his chest as he looked through the window.

The warmth was quickly inundated with ice water as saw what was happening inside.

Lois Lane on Clark Kent’s lap. They were kissing. He was smiling. There were empty pasta plates and wine glasses on the coffee table and an unmistakable aura of intimacy around the couple.

Bruce’s breaths were coming far to quickly and he had to leave before they saw them. He climbed up the repelling line as quickly and as silently as he could, and when he got to the top, Clark was there, standing by his plane.

Bruce took a deep breath and held it.

Clark’s eyes looked sad but not particularly apologetic.

“I heard you climbing up the wall…” Clark ventured.

Bruce wanted to say something in reply, but he could not. His mind was blank and his throat was tight and he felt a little dizzy.

“Listen Bruce, I—“

Bruce pushed past him and tried to get to his plane, to leave, to fly back to his city and—

And what?

“Bruce, Lois is in the bathroom and I don’t have much time…” Clark tried again.

“Then go back.” The bitterness and hostility in his voice surprised even him and Clark looked like he had slapped him.

Clark’s voice was sad when he answered. “I tried, Bruce.”

Bruce swallowed and got into his plane. “So did I.”

I'm glad you liked it. I don't know what came over me.

Ouch! Oh Bruce. The sad thing is, he did try, but he's so closed off. And Clark...Oh, Clark you belong with Bruce, don't give up on him.

This was wonderfully done!

I'm glad you liked it. I hope that Clark will soon realize that Bruce is who and what he needs. >:O

Poor Bruce. Why is it that the strongest man on earth is also the thickest. I love this so much, even if you did break Bruce's heart. Keep writing these and I'll have to have a bruce/clark spot on my memories page.

Great job.

Bruce :(

I'm glad you liked it even if I was mean to Bruce.

Ouch. So painful. I really dislike Clark in this one, but I'm glad you fixed it in the next story.

I'm glad you liked it. I didn't try to paint Clark a villain, he was just hurt and confused!

Hmm, I know everyone's making Clark out to be the villain, and it's true he didn't wait long to get together with Lois, but it must be awfully frustrating for him to deal with a closed-off Bruce all the time. He probably just got tired of banging his head against a wall.

Having said that, he should have broken it off with Bruce before taking up with Lois, though maybe he did during the bad fight.

I feel sorry for both men here! :(

You're totally right. I did not want Clark to be seen as the villian. Neither of them were the bad guy, it was just a rough situation and they needed to work though it before things between the two of them.

I'm glad you didn't think Clark was the bad guy.

Awwww! This was so unbelievably sad! But I still really liked it. I definitely have to read the happy one so I can go to work feeling better. *hugs the Boys tightly*

NOW do you see why I didn't want you to read it before I fixed it!? I'm glad you enjoyed though!
