Brainy's Smile

Lyle liked to watch people. He always had. He spent his childhood watching his father work. He loved to watch his father’s hands move over his instruments and computers. He loved to see the look of concentration on his father’s face as he worked. His father never spoke to him much as he watched, but he would occasionally look up from his work and smile at Lyle.

When Lyle first joined the Legion, he had found Brainy to be a bit off putting. No one was entirely sure whether he was an android or an alien and he always came off as rather cold to the team. He never got worked up about anything and he hardly ever changed his facial expressions.

Saturn Girl told Lyle that Brainy was a completely different person when Superboy was around, but Lyle found that hard to believe. However, the concept intrigued him. He wanted to know what Brainy was like when there weren’t dozens of other members of the Legion around.

So Lyle started following Brainy around with his belt turned on. It wasn’t a terribly hard thing to do as Brainy tended to spend most of his time in his labs. Lyle had found that Brainy did get up to some interesting things.

So he started to watch Brainy work. Brainy’s hands, and other components, worked easily over his instruments. He worked in conjunction with the computers, syncing up with them to sort out solutions to his problems.

Lyle soon discovered that many of his initial assumptions about Brainy were wrong. While he might have been part machine, he was not the least bit cold and mechanical. His facial expressions did change, but it was slight.

Lyle found he enjoyed watching Brainy work, that it made him feel just as good as it had to watch his father work. The only difference was that Brainy never smiled like his father had.

It felt nice to be able to see a side of Brainy that no one else could, as the other members of the Legion were barred from Brainy’s labs.

So Lyle watched and observed and hide in the small corners with is invisibility belt activated. Brainy gave no indication that he knew he was being watching, so Lyle just assumed that he had no idea.

Until one day Brainy started a new project. He was working with some type of machinery when one of the cables that came out of his arm broke loose.

“Oh no,” Brainy’s voice broke though the silence of the lab and Lyle’s heart began to race. Brainy never spoke when he worked. Something must be going on.

“Look out!” Brainy shouted and the next thing Lyle knew was that he was being tackled to the ground. They hit the floor just as the machine exploded and Lyle felt Brainy’s arms come up over his head, protecting Lyle’s face and ears.

Lyle coughed and gagged as Brainy lifted him and carried him out of the lab, flicking on the sprinklers and decontamination system as they left. He sealed the room and put Lyle on the floor, using a sleeve to wipe soot and dust from Lyle’s face and hair.

Lyle coughed. “You knew I was there?”

“Of course I knew. My sensors picked you up the minute you walked into my labs,” Brainy said, his voice was caustic but his eyes were wide and worried.

“You didn’t mind me being there?” Lyle asked, his lips loose and his head still in a bit of a daze.

Brainy sighed then pursed his lips. “No, I didn’t mind.”

They were both quiet for a moment as Brainy checked him over for injuries.

“The lab gets a bit lonely sometimes,” Brainy conceded after a minute. “It was nice to have you there.”

Lyle reached up and ran a hand lightly over Brainy’s cheek.

“Thank you,” he whispered and for the first time since he started watching Brainy, he saw him smile.

Aww. I love how Brainy doesn't find it necessary to mention that he enjoys Lyle's company.

Also, LoSH cartoon! Yay!

I'm glad you liked it.

I've been giving serious thought to what would happen if Tim ever met up with Lyle and Brainy. :D

I keep thinking that if Tim/Kon and Ted/Booster met Lyle/Brainy, Booster and Kon would end up commiserating over in the corner about how it's the brains that save the world, but someone (namely them) always has to end up punching something along the way, and they never get their props. :)

Aww sweet! Cute adorable cartoon brainy! He's just way to adorable for his own good. ... I still don't get why he's a Gundam but whatevah. I love that you brought Lyle into that universe. So cute! And that cartoon is DEFINITELY they gayest cartoon ever in the history of cartoons. Gayer than He-man and She-Ra and Gayer than Static Shock. Because really... Brainy SOOOO Had a thing for Clark.
