Worry Dolls

About a year and a half ago Roy had been hurt during a mission for the Justice League. It wasn’t a terrible injury but it was a magical one and Dr. Midnite insisted he stay in the infirmary in the Watchtower for several days of observation.

Lian had been worried sick.

She was a well behaved kid, generally. Lian was sweet and considerate. She listened to Roy and her teachers. She rarely threw temper tantrums, always had a smile and a laugh and never stayed angry for long.

After Roy was hurt, however, she was impossible. She got angry at everyone who wasn’t him, threw tantrums when he couldn’t come home and cried harder than Roy had ever seen her cry when she had to leave at night. Roy was almost positive that Dr. Midnite released him as early as he did more to get a screaming Lian out of his infirmary than anything else.

The next few weeks, after Roy got home, Lian would follow him everywhere. She would cry when he had to go to work or she had to go to school. She would slip into his bed every night and she started to have nightmares.

Roy was at his wits end.

He knew she was worried for him, he could see it in her eyes. They were huge and sunken from lack of sleep, there were dark circles under them. They looked at him with a feverish desperation that he recognized from his own childhood.

She was scared she was going to lose him.

He told her time and time again that there was nothing to be scared of. He would never leave her and that, even if something did happen to him she had Dinah and Ollie and Dick.

She finally seemed to get better but Dinah said that Lian was only normal when he was around. When he was gone she was just as clingy and temperamental as she had been. Even her teacher had mentioned it.

In a last ditch effort to try and comfort her, he went out and bought her ten Worry Men. When he had been young, he had his fair share of nightmares. Brave Bow had bought him a few Worry Men at a tourist trap, explaining to him that he didn’t have to worry about the things that were making it hard for him to sleep, the dolls would worry for him. They had worked, mostly.

The ones he found for Lian looked exactly like the ones Brave Bow had given him. They were tiny, smaller than a matchstick. Their clothing was made out of tightly wound, colorful thread and the girl’s dresses were pretty scraps of fabric. They all fit into a tiny draw string pouch at the end of a necklace.

Roy took them home and gave them to Lian. She was skeptical at first but he had happened upon her whispering into the ears of those tiny dolls quite often.

A year had gone by and Lian had taken to keeping them under her pillow rather than around her neck. She still used them, but not quite as often and Roy was glad.

Roy hadn’t given the tiny little dolls much thought in months until one day a few weeks after he and Lian had gone to visit Dick. Tim had been there and he had looked terrible.

Of course, he hid it well. He smiled for Lian, teased and tickled her but even she had noticed. She asked him about Tim on the car ride home from New York.

“Is he sad?” she inquired.

“Yes, but it’s not just that,” Roy answered.

“What is he besides sad?”

“He’s just worried about a lot of things, Nizhoni,” Roy tried to explain. “He’s worried about how hard Dick is taking losing Bruce. He’s worried because of his new job and school. He’s worried he’s going to lose more people,” Roy sighed heavily. “He’s just got a lot of things to worry about. Too much.”

Lian made a soft understanding noise and settled more comfortably into the back seat. She didn’t say a word for the rest of the drive and, for that, Roy was grateful.

The next morning at breakfast, Lian dropped a small bundle into his hand. Roy looked down at it, confused. Lian explained to him what it was and Roy smiled.

He tracked Tim down that night.

When he found him, Tim was perched on the edge of one of Wayne Enterprises’ skyscrapers. He was looking down on his city with a sad expression even his mask couldn’t hide.

Roy sat down next to him and Tim lifted a curious eyebrow.

“I am under orders from the Boss to give you this,” he informed Tim dutifully.

Tim took the small bundle and pulled the tissue paper open to find a string of white plastic beads with a small Worry Man glued to the bottom.

“It’s… lovely…” Tim said in his ‘I learned to be polite in boarding school’ voice.

“His name is Mr. Kicky-Sticks. I’m assuming that’s because he likes to kick sticks but Lian wasn’t completely clear on that,” Roy said and felt warm inside at Tim’s small smile.

“Mr. Kicky-Sticks, huh?” Tim’s voice was soft as he turned the necklace over in his hands.

“Yep, Mr. Kicky-Sticks. Now here’s the thing I do know about Mr. Kicky-Sticks: He’s magic,” Roy confided.

“Magic?” Tim inquired.

“Yes, magic. What you do is, you tell Mr. Kicky-Sticks all the things you’re worried about or scared of or even the things you wish you could tell someone else but feel like you can’t. Then Mr. Kicky-Sticks—magically, mind you—takes them into his little Kicky-Sticks brain and worries about them for you so you don’t have to worry about them yourself. It’s kind of like a time saving thing. It gives you more time to be happy and relaxed,” Roy explained with an easy smile, but he watched Tim carefully.

Tim swallowed hard as he fingered Mr. Kicky-Sticks through his glove. Then he unclasped his cape and undid the top catches on his tunic. He put the Mr. Kicky-Sticks necklace on and looked up at Roy.

“Thank you,” he whispered to Roy and in his voice Roy could hear everything that Tim was probably going to say to Mr. Kicky-Sticks tonight when he was alone.

Roy cupped Tim’s cheek with a reassuring hand and leaned down to press a kiss to Tim’s mouth. He could feel Tim’s hand clutching the small doll against his chest as he kissed Tim as softly and gently as possible.

“You’re welcome,” he answered and hugged him.

Mr. Kicky Sticks!

That was very sweet, very cute, and I am not dying of sugar-overload. Yet.

I love Roy. Truly. Just as much as I love my darling freaky Bat-boy.

Just to be safe, don't eat anything with sugar for the rest of the day.

Roy is such a great guy and such a good Daddy. <3
